Southern Rock and Roll!
Nothing pleases the ear quite like southern-fried rock and roll. The links on this page will lead you to some of the bands that I enjoy the most. So sit back and in the words of the Allman Brothers, “Eat a peach”!
ZZ Top
Just that little ‘ol band from Texas! Gibbons, Hill, and Beard are responsible for such timeless classics as
“LaGrange”, “Precious and Grace”, and “Tush”.
Big Smith
From Springfield, Missouri. This band includes my cousin Jay Williamson on drums, spoons, and washboard. Playing what can only be described as “hillbilly alternative” they mix bluegrass, country, and rock in a truly unique fashion.
Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Laser beams in my dreams! One of the greatest party bands ever. This famous group from Springfield, Missouri scored hits with songs like “Jackie Blue”, If You Wanna Get to Heaven”, and “Chicken Train”. The only band besides Big Smith and the Charlie Daniels Band I’ve been to see on multiple occasions.
Head East
Another great party band. This group is originally from southern Illinois. They achieved great success in the
1970’s with songs like “Never Been Any Reason”, “City of Gold”, and “Love me Tonight”.
The Charlie Daniels Band
The ultimate band! The CDB has been making music since the early 1970’s and is famous for such hits as “The Devil went down to Georgia”, “The legend of Wooly Swamp”, and “Long haired country boy”. Recent albums include many patriotic themes. My entire family enjoys going to see Charlie Daniels. My youngest son and I have attended CDB concerts in St. Louis, Springfield, Cuba, Sedalia, Kirksville, Steelville, Owensville, Branson, and Washington, MO.
.38 Special
The thinking man’s Southern rock band. These guys from Jacksonville, Florida put on a great show! My youngest son and I saw them in 2001 in St. Louis. My personal favorites include “Chain Lightnin’”, “If I’d Been the One”, “Rebel to Rebel”, and “Second Chance”.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Another group out of Jacksonville, Florida. One of the greatest all-time musical groups, their career was cut short due to a plane crash on October 20, 1977. The group has reformed and still rocks today. Some of their greatest hits were “Gimme Three Steps”, “Call Me the Breeze”, “Free Bird”, and “Saturday Night Special”
Allman Brothers Band
Still another band from Jacksonville, Florida. This band is the granddaddy of them all. Their great hits include such classics as “Whipping Post”, “Dreams”, “Melissa”, and “Ramblin’ Man”.
Marshall Tucker Band
A legendary band from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Their hits include “Heard it in a Love Song”, “Can’t You See”, and “Fire on the Mountain”. One of my all-time favorites. I met the members of this band in Kansas City, Missouri in 1982.
